Thaxted is not only surrounded by gorgeous Essex countryside, but it is also home to some lovely open spaces where tourists and residents alike can enjoy the fresh country air.

Whether you're hoping to bring a picnic, read the paper, play with your kids, walk your dog, or just relax and unwind, there are several locations in Thaxted where you can enjoy being outdoors. Below is a list of some recommendations.

The Windmill

John Webb's Windmill features a fenced area surrounding the Windmill, with benches and plenty of space to lay a picnic. This space is open year-round. The Windmill itself is currently undergoing restoration and will not be open to the public until further notice.

Location: From the junction of Watling Street and Bolford Street, walk past the church and between the two Almshouses. Proceed straight ahead through the first kissing gate, past the churchyard and through the second kissing gate. This route has to be the most photographed in Thaxted!

Margaret St. Garden

Margaret St. Garden is a small communal area with a bench and a small space for picnics. Morris dancing and craft fairs are occasionally held here.

Location: Behind India Villa, at the junction of Margaret St. and Bell Lane.

Recreation Ground

The Thaxted Recreation Ground include a playing field, a basketball/netball court and children's play area.

Location: Thaxted Recreation Ground, Newbiggen Street, Thaxted, Essex CM6 2PT

As you leave Thaxted on the B184 heading for Saffron Walden, the car park entrance is on the right hand side just beyond the last house.

Walnut Tree Meadow

Walnut Tree Meadow is a large open space where you can take a stroll, walk your dog, or enjoy a picnic.

Location: From the junction of Town Street and The Tanyard (next to Wayletts), proceed up The Tanyard continue into Copthall Lane. Follow Copthall Lane to the end of the houses and the meadow is on your left.

Cutler's Green

Cutler's Green is an open space located about a mile west of Thaxted.

Location: As you leave Thaxted towards Saffron Walden, turn left into Bolford Street, opposite The Swan. Proceed approximately 1 mile and Cutler's Green will be on your left.

Bardfield End Green

Bardfield End Green is an open space and cricket ground located 1.2 miles to the east of Thaxted.

Location: As you leave Thaxted towards Dunmow, turn left into Bardfield Road. Proceed 1.2 miles and Bardfield End Green will be on your right.
